Buying a flute?

When you’re thinking about buying a flute, the choices out there can be overwhelming. Open or closed holes? In-line or off-set G keys? To say nothing of finer details like pointed key arms or drawn tone holes…

Generally, I recommend: 1)buying a flute instead of renting (this also means not doing rent-to-own deals, which are almost always overpriced compared to what you get), 2)buying from a reputable dealer who specializes in flutes (see the links below for suggestions), and 3)ignoring special features that are nice but not necessary (like C# trill keys) in favor of getting the best craftsmanship overall.

The flutes below are ones that I and fellow teachers have seen students have good experiences with. Think of this list as a starting point – but remember, only you can decide which flute is right for you. So definitely take advantage of programs that let you try out several, choose one, and send back the rest.

Plus, remember it’s part of your teacher’s job to help you find a flute. Whether you’re taking lessons from me or someone else, make sure to draw upon our expertise to help you navigate the process.
