Why take lessons?

“I started lessons with Lisa because I wanted to get a higher grade on my playing quizzes. But now the flute has become so much more than that in my life. There is so much to learn and I want to know it all.” – A high school flute student

You’re learning flute in school band – so why take lessons? I’ve got three reasons here:

1 – Flute lessons make everything easier to play.

Think of it like a video game, where you need to level up your character by getting more XP. In private flute lessons, you’ll learn the time-tested exercises that develop your technique so that whatever you see on the page isn’t a unique challenge – it’s just one more thing you can play in stride.

2 – Flute lessons are a chance to define yourself as an artist.

When’s the last time you chose what you wanted to play? With lessons, you get a completely individualized approach – which means you will start to identify the styles you like best, and know what kind of flute sound you want to create. There really are a lot of options – and while there’s nothing quite like being part of something bigger than yourself, there’s also a lot of value to be found in nourishing your own creative path, too. When you combine private lessons with school band, you get the best of both worlds.

3 – And sure, flute lessons will probably help your grade.

I have a lot of students who start for this reason, and that’s okay! I love working with students who want to get ahead over the summer, and I completely respect your ability to define your own priorities. And yet… I keep finding that even my students who start out wanting tutoring for band class quickly start to develop their own ideas and gain a desire to strike out on their own path. My job as a teacher is to support your ability to do just this.
